OTAGO
North.

At Oamaru we stayed at the only campsite - luckily it was pretty nice! It was set at the end of a long park which was beautifully kept and included Japanese Gardens and a picturesque stream running through. The town centre was indeed all built from local white stone, which gave it a very Georgian English look. My must see attraction was the local cheese factory - a bit of a walk out of town, but well worth it. After tasting every kind of cheese they made we walked out with a big bag of the most delicious cheese we’d had for ages at a fraction of the price in the supermarket!! Hel’s must see attraction by contrast was another beach famous for it’s yellow eyed penguin colony. The weather wasn’t so great, but we’d been assured that there had been quite a few of them coming ashore lately, so we headed down there at the recommended time and dutifully sat in the hide high up on the cliff. Unlike the little blue ones, these penguins won’t
come ashore if they see humans, so it was important to stay hidden. It wasn’t the most impressive display really though, we sat for two hours and saw two penguins from absolutely miles away. It did make us laugh though that there were people trying to get photos of them with their mobile phones when we could only just see them with our powerful zoom lens!! Nothing like a roast dinner to warm you up after sitting in the cold for two hours, so that’s exactly what we had!! Just the thing to get us ready for the next adventure - back into the Alps to Mount Cook Village!!
