RIO STATE
headed there for a top feed!! The town itself was reasonably ok, but a little modern and not so quaint as Itaipava, so after a little look around and some shopping for veggies to cook for tea we headed back to the hostel.
The main attraction here was the National Park, and in the morning we were lucky enough to cadge a lift there from the hostel lady, who also worked at the park. There were lots of good walks through the rainforest, with spectacular views over the valley and into the mountains. We encountered lots of signs pointing out the various wildlife present, including one with a picture of a very scary looking snake!! Just after we’d seen this one we nearly jumped out of our skins as a huge green lizard lumbered out of the foliage just ahead of us! short elevated walkways through the tops of the trees and making our way back down the hill and catching the bus back into town.
That night we had the pleasure of watching a great thunderstorm from the hostel’s terrace - there was some great lightning!! We had loved the chilled vibe here inland from Rio and wanted to visit Tiradentes, another little town further inland. We found out though that to get there we would have to go back to Rio first, and during the 2 hour journey back we had an impromptu change of plan and decided that it wasn’t really worth it and that we should go down South instead and see what the coastal towns had to offer. Parati was our chosen destination and we organised bus tickets and accommodation there when we arrived back in Rio.
