LIVINGSTONE ISLAND

Whilst the wildlife was varied and abundant here the surrounding scenery didn’t really live up to some of the fantastic things we’d seen further down on the peninsula. We were due to have a four hour landing but after around two hours we were ready to head back to the ship. We had our last zodiac ride with our favourite Speedy and after getting changed we went to the bar for a cup of tea. Just as we were finished our tea the 2nd mate came down to the bar and informed us there were humpback whales all around the bay!

Wow, how could we be so lucky? We headed up to the bridge and watched in awe as these gentle giants splashed around. We were also very envious that the divers were out cruising around them but guessed that they must be having the dive of their lives. We also saw that the last zodiac had made its way over to the whales. Oh how we wanted that zodiac to come back and let
everyone enjoy this whale watching spectacle. We were quite surprised when the zodiacs stayed out for over 30 minutes and we were wondering why there were two empty zodiacs on the ship, when there was whale watching to be done. It was really starting to frustrate us and by the time we went down to the restaurant for lunch we were really quite sad about it. By this point all of the zodiacs had returned and I went and asked Troels why they hadn’t come back and let everybody have a close encounter with these gentle giants. He was saying that it was just luck and he couldn’t do anything about it, so I pointed out that there had been two empty zodiacs on the ship and two very experienced zodiac drivers who would have been more than willing to take us out! As I was pleading with him to let us go out, he said that it was very difficult but to give him ten minutes. True to his word he came back in ten minutes time and said that anybody who hadn’t already been out could go out whale watching - RESULT! What a star,
