WANAKA & QUEENSTOWN
walk to a nice little waterfall, formed when the glacier which used to fill this valley melted. There were two DOC campsites near Wanaka, and after rejecting the first one, we set up our Bongo at Kidds Bush Campsite, on the shores of Lake Hawea, one of the two huge lakes in this area again caused by melting glaciers. A half hour nature walk, and a top tea of Hel뭩 risotto, we settled in for the night at yet another bargain and fantastic location!!
The next morning the sun was shining again, and we drove the remaining few kilometres in to Wanaka itself. Our first stop was the DOC office to pickup a leaflet on the walks in the area, they do these leaflets for a bargain price of 35p!!! This in reality was no problem at all, as the place was lovely, and for the moment the weather was fine. We had a walk up Mount Iron, a 2 hour walk up an outcrop with great views of the two lakes and the surrounding mountains, and then went for a drive up Mount Aspiring Road, and although it was to cloudy for views of the peak itself, the scenery again was stunning. We had planned another night at a DOC campsite, but on the way we뭗 spied a campground literally right on the lakeside, and as the sun was shining, and we were in no rush, we though we뭗 splash out the extra ?.50 to stay there. Our plan was to get the chairs out and relax by the lake and soak up the sunshine until sunset. It didn뭪 quite happen that way due to the rather chilly wind coming off the lake which we hadn뭪 banked
