OTAGO

28TH APRIL - 1ST MAY

The drive to Dunedin was quite long, and after going shopping we made our way to our chosen campsite, Dunedin Holiday Park. We were quite alarmed to find that it bore a striking resemblance to the caravan parks at Rhyl and Prestatyn!!! The vans were packed in quite tightly, and just after we’d arrived a scruffy old truck pulled up with an equally scruffy old caravan in tow, and out jumped four guys all drinking beer. They emptied out a carrier bag of empty beer bottles into the bin, and then started throwing a rugby ball around, and soon had Hel involved in an impromptu game of Rugby. Her eyes told me that she wasn’t to enthusiastic about this, so despite the few drops of rain falling from the sky we went off for a walk on the beach. On the beach we found lots of huge bits of seaweed, I had never seen seaweed so big!!! It was quite a pleasant walk down the beach, and after a couple of miles we came to St Clair, the next town along. We felt an irresistible urge to sample
the wares of the seafront pub, and didn’t fight it!! J It was a lovely little pub with a pizza restaurant attached with some really tasty looking pizzas!! We did resist the urge to sample them though, and headed back to Bongo to indulge in the bargain wine we’d got from the supermarket. It had been quite a while since we’d been somewhere big enough to have a proper supermarket with cheap prices!! Unfortunately though, despite us having lots of nice food the campsite locked up the kitchen at 9pm, so we ended up dining at the campsite chip shop!!

The next morning we headed into Dunedin on the bus. It was Saturday and we didn’t fancy the traffic. We’d learned from our new mates that there was a big Rugby game on, hence them staying at the camp site!! The city was really pleasant - it was known as New Zealand’s Scottish city, and it was very weird seeing shops selling tartan kilts and
