DEVIL ISLAND & WEDDELL SEA
21ST JANUARY
The atmosphere on the ship was ecstatic and we still had another landing to make! The scenery continued to be out of this world as we slowly manoeuvred our way to Devil Island. Devil Island had two prominent hilltops that sort of looked like horns which we guessed was where it got its name. Before our landing we headed out in the zodiacs and cruised round some of the many icebergs that were floating around. Again this was an incredible sight, the colours were stunning and the way these bergs almost shone in the bright sunshine was astounding. We were buzzing around the Weddell Sea in a zodiac and we were cherishing every moment, the adrenalin was flowing as much for us as it was for Troels who was driving our zodiac - no wonder Troels’s favourite catchphrase were super-sensational, it summed it up pretty perfectly!Devil Island had another large Adelie penguin rookery
and although the numbers weren’t as large as they were on Paulet Island, they were still as cute and easy to observe. We had a three hour landing and due to the penguin numbers not being so large it gave people a chance to do a bit more walking. We on the other hand missed the trail up the hill so decided to just head along the beach. Again it was slow going, but the comings and goings of the penguins were still as fascinating as they had been earlier on in the day. We guessed that we had enough penguin photos so decided to just sit down and watch these curious little creatures.
We sat ourselves down in front of a rock that was just near to the waters edge, leaned back and observed! It was incredible to see these little penguins coming out of the water in such numbers. Jacob who was standing near to the waters edge even had one land on his foot! They are very curious and as we had been sitting
