DEVIL ISLAND & WEDDELL SEA
for quite a while a few of the penguins that were hovering around on the beach decided to come and take a closer look at us! One got to arms length distance from Rob and just stood there looking at him before it plucked up the courage to come a little bit closer. Not only did it come closer it started pecking at Robs leg! Now what do you do? You can’t shout or shoo it away so you just had to sit there while it pecks away at you! It is hard to put into words the feeling that this gives you, its just an unbelievable sense of excitement and joy. It is a great feeling knowing that these penguins seem to have accepted you and feel safe enough to come and check you out! After having a good old peck at Rob it decided to come and check me out too. It walked almost over my foot then came around to my left side and after a quick observation didn’t waste much time on the pecking front. It was pecking at my arm and I had to try and get my hand far enough up my sleeve in case it decided to peck my hand. I had by
this point taken off my gloves due to the glorious weather we were experiencing and I didn’t want it pecking my skin! It was a truly joyful moment, although it did have a sharp peck to it! After it got bored of me it then decided to climb on the rock that we were leaning on and approach from a different angle! It was obviously feeling very brave and decided that this time it was Rob’s hat and coat collar that were going to get it! We managed to get some great photos of this so make sure you check them out!

After all of this penguin excitement it was time to start making our way back down the beach towards the zodiacs. It was almost impossible keeping the 5 metre rule. The 5 metre rule being the space between you and the penguins, but as long as you moved as slowly as you could, then they didn’t seem to mind. Not everyone in our group seemed to show the same respect towards the penguins
