FLåM
24-27TH MAY 2005
Left Bergen in the pouring rain and then boarded the train to flam, the next part of our journey. The train ride from Bergen to Oslo is supposed to be one the best in the world! I know all travel brochures say that, but having experienced some of the Norwegian countryside already we were really looking forward to it. The train left on time, no surprise there, it was basic but sturdy, the first 5 to 10 minutes were tunnel after tunnel and we were like ER what’s going on, but then a load more wow’s from the riley-d’s! The scenery was again amazing, and how they build some of the tracks, god only knows but it puts England’s pathetic attempt at train travel to double shame! I think we timed it really well cause all the snow on the mountains is melting so all the rivers are swollen and very fast, lots of rapids, waterfalls and crystal clear beautifully coloured water. ACE until the Rhapsody herd boarded the train and caused some chaos! It turns out Rhapsody was a massivecruise ship docked in Flam, and we had the joy of travelling with an excursion party from it! How pleased was Rob! Their tour guides had a little flag and banner so she could herd them around, if either me or Rob ever get like that shoot us - its not even as if they were proper oldies!

Had to change at Myrdal then we had the absolute joy of travelling on the Flamsbana railway. This is the steepest railway in the world, Myrdal is 866 metres above sea-level and Flam is 2, it’s bloody steep! It’s a 1-18 gradient, it took 20 years to construct and one tunnel took 10 years to make, its got 20 tunnels and 18 were excavated by hand - now that’s dedication! Again the views were wild and strikingly beautiful. When the
