BANGKOK
DELHI TO BANGKOK
16th 20th October
Unfortunately the timetable for buses to Delhi in our hotel in Rishikesh bared no resemblance to the actual times of the buses. It would have been a real pain to get the train as we would have had to have an overnight stay in Hardiwar which would enable us to catch the 7.30a.m. train. The timetable said that there was an 8.30 a.m. bus which took 6 hours, the train was 5 so we thought we’d be better off suffering yet another Indian bus journey! When are we ever gonna learn! The bus left at 12.30 which was supposed to get us into Delhi at 6, not too bad then!We boarded the bus at 1.45 and the driver decided in his own time what time to set off, he then drove approximately 5 mph with frequent stops for the next few miles, so must have been at least an hour before we got going properly. Then
of course there was the obligatory traffic jam which with the impatience of the Indians makes things ten times worse as everyone just drives as far as they can get thus jamming the road even more! We gave each other that look of "why the hell didn't we get the train?"
It eventually got into Delhi around 8.30 p.m. and then seemed to drive past the Red Fort a good couple of times before we finally pulled into the bus station.
Rob did his usual haggling magic with the rickshaw driver and soon we were off again on what we thought was the way to our pre-booked hotel. We have pre-booked as we couldn't be bothered with any hassle trying to find anywhere in Delhi and had decided to pay a little more than usual and get a decent room especially after the last dump we'd stayed in there. The rickshaw driver was a chatty fellow and took great delight
