NORTHLAND
wasn’t great for anyone who got in Britain’s way while it was ’discovering’ its way around the world, claiming land from here there and everywhere! It didn’t take the Maori long to realise that they had been duped good and proper and there was severe unrest in the following years with the New Zealand wars, which I had never even heard of! Every since Maori have been trying to reclaim what surely is their land, thankfully now as with Australia there are moves being made to right some of the past’s wrongs and rightly so.
We were a little bit late to go around the actual Treaty house so we checked out the immediate area and wow was it beautiful. After a good look around the area we made our way back to the campsite so we could sit, chill and watch what sunset there would be. It was really beautiful, it was so peaceful and the views were just stunning. We were also treated to our first good

view of the southern skies later on that night, the moon was really bright and we had clear skies and the stars were amazing. Rob was really eager to find out more about them as we hadn’t really seen stars like this before, well we have but they were all different and upside down!!!
We were up early and actually felt like we were bouncing with energy, this travelling business must be doing us good! We drove up to Karikari Peninsula and stayed at Matai Bay DOC (department of conversation) campsite, again wow what a place, it was to us an area of outstanding beauty and to Maori it was an area of scared land, which you were asked to fully respect. Everything was just getting better and better, we were definitely going to love our time in New Zealand! The DOC campsites are similar to the ones in Australia, basic but cheap but they are generally in fabulous locations and it really is great
