WELLINGTON
hill was fairly steep but the steps which were situated at various points during the walk were something else. They were huge, I’m sure they had been built by the All Blacks, they were definitely made for large people! So after heaving myself up these pesky things I was pretty relieved to get to the top. The path seemed to go on forever and we soon realised that we wouldn’t be able to complete the full circuit walk as it would take too long. The views from where we got to though were great, it was very much like Welsh country even to the point of being in the clouds and typical early morning Welsh drizzle!!! We boarded the ferry around 4.30 and were keeping our fingers crossed that we would have a smooth journey as apparently the Cook Strait can be one of the roughest stretches of sea in the world. We were very lucky though and had a good smooth journey and arrived in Picton bang on time at 9.15 p.m. We had pre-booked into a campsite, which was about 10 minutes drive from the terminal. We found it no problem and hey presto it had a phone, which meant that I could give my Mum another call and see how she was doing. It is very bizarre sitting there drinking wine chatting away with your Mum knowing that it is morning time in the UK. I remember when Jules would phone us when she lived in New Zealand very merry and we were like “Jules its 8 O’clock in the morning” and she would say “its Friday night here” - I now know what she
