HILO & MAUNA KEA
shopping till later.

We walked down into Hilo and were pretty unimpressed with what we saw. Rob found the place more interesting than me but it was a big disappointment. It was also bank holiday which meant all of the 30 or so shops were mainly closed - great! The shuttle back to the hostel was picking us up at 5.30 so we had around 8 hours to kill in a town that was basically shut! We managed to entertain ourselves and had a picnic in the park, then finally it was time to start the hours walk back up to the shops. We did the shopping which included a very large bottle of wine, the only way to get through living at this hostel for the next week was to hit the wine on a regular basis!!! After shopping we went to our allocated pick up stop and waited and waited and waited. Hmmm Mr 24/7/365 wasn’t exactly on the ball when it came to his pick up service, infact we ended up phoning the hostel who said
there was no driver available and they would call a cab! We arrived back at the hostel to find Mr 24/7/365 watering the stones around the tenting area - weird or what??? The watering of his stones became a feature of this man’s daily life, for reasons best known to himself. Despite the fact that it would rain heavily in bursts throughout the night, he would be out watering his stones first thing in the morning - what a freak!!! Neither of us could quite work out this bizarre ritual but it did get on my pip when he then went onto to water our tent whilst watering the tree trunk!!!

Our plan had been to go on the Mauna Kea Sunset and Star gazing trip on the 14th, hire a car on the 15th and have that until 2 days before we flew back to Oahu. Unfortunately the trip was sold out which meant that we were stuck there until the 17th - arrrrhhh. Not what we wanted but car hire was very expensive and we
