THE LAKE DISTRICT (ARGENTINA)
a half for lunch. We hadn’t opted for buying lunch there because it was expensive and consisted largely of big pieces of barbequed meat - your typical Argentinean meal!! So we sat outside and ate our picnic, although fairly quickly, as the combination of the sun going in and the strong wind had made it rather chilly!! The next optional activity was a boat trip on the lake. We weren’t going to do this originally, but not doing it meant another hour and a half of hanging around in the wind, so we decided to go for it. To be honest we were quite glad we did as it was a pretty good trip. We cruised over into another lake where there was a lava field from another nearby volcano which reminded us of the places in Hawaii and Arizona which we’d previously seen. At one point we stopped by a waterfall and the hosts took great delight in handing water from it around to everyone!! By this time though the clouds had totally come down and there was no view of the volcano at all - and just to rub it in we were
shown a photo of what it looks like when it’s clear!! We couldn’t complain too much though I guess, we had at least seen it which given the weather of the day before was looking fairly unlikely. On the journey home the guide finally stopped rabbiting on and we had a peaceful journey back to San Martin.

Our next stop was Villa La Angostura, another pretty little village just about opposite Bariloche on Lago Nahuel Huapi. We’d booked a room at the Italian Hostel, which turned out to be another great place. Our room was obviously very new, and in fact would be more accurately described as half a room. It was on the second floor of the building, with a sloping roof which made it about ten foot high on one side, and two foot on the other!! Still it was very pleasant and warm so we didn’t mind. Once again the place had a great kitchen and nice lounge with an open fire so after a quick look
