TUPIZA
Africa, which we are sure to see and will be all too real, but parts of South America seem to have been forgotten by the powers that be when it comes to handing out aid. Although I’m not really sure that Bolivia would want to be a western ‘pitied’ aid dependent country.

Maybe the West doesn’t like the fact that the Bolivians don’t really want much in terms of Western values, they are happy with their own traditions and don’t really seem ready to adapt to the pressures of the Western world and its greedy culture. (their President loves Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s George Bush loving President - smell the sulphur!!!) Or maybe the West thinks that the Bolivian coca farmers should immediately stop production of their valued coca leaf, something which is easier said than done if you’re a Bolivian coca farmer. Bolivia’s attitude is, stop the Western demand for cocaine and we’ll stop the
production, which is a fair comment really. It is also true to say that the farmers themselves are totally stuck in the middle, if they stop production they get serious hassle from the drug barons and if they continue they get grief off the Western governments, well the USA in particular. So they really are in a no win situation, but as things stand they are ignoring the Western pleas as there is still ample demand for their valued leaf.

Actually the internet café was fine so we didn’t end up as frustrated as you can sometimes get when you’re using Bolivian internet! Then it was back to the hostel for some sort of chilling. I did yet more of our never-ending
