TAIWAN
were two spare computers there so it was ideal, and I got to speak to Aria, my old boss, which was nice as I hadn’t spoken to him in ages!! It was very weird sitting in an office environment rather than an internet café!! Jerry suggested that we should probably go away somewhere before Christmas as they were having a party on Christmas day which we were invited to, and he had a few days off after when he could take us round the more local sights in his car. So we decided we’d go and spend a few days in Taroko Gorge, Taiwan’s premier tourist area on the East coast., and with a little help with phone calls from Jerry, we found a room in a Catholic hostel(!!!!) for the bargain price of £10 a night. It may not seem like a bargain after South East Asia, but Taiwan is very expensive in comparison, and this was a cheap as it got! At this point Jerry disappeared for a short while and returned with some bags of veggie dumplings, which were lovely, a perfect afternoon sn
ack!!!

We needed to book train tickets so we ventured out to the metro on our trusty machines - and despite a wrong turning or two got there in one piece, Taipei’s metro, or MRT as they call it was pretty simple to work out, and in no time we were at the maze of floors that is Taipei Main Station! We found the ticket office though, and with a little pointing and gesturing we had our train to Hualien booked, and we were told that it was easy to get the bus to Taroko Gorge from there. Back at Jerry’s we went to the supermarket to stock up on instant noodles and soup, as we’d heard that the food there wasn’t up to much, and packed our small bags with just the stuff we needed for a couple of days away before heading off to bed.
