THE PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY
firewood by having a rip roaring fire - bliss!
The previous day we had checked campsite availability on the internet and seen that there was very little. There was one campsite which stood out but was a long drive away, they didn't take bookings but with 540 pitches we didn't think we would have too much trouble getting a pitch. We left fairly handy as it was a long drive but we were going to be driving down the best part of the Californian coastline, they part between Monterey and Big Sur. The coastline didn't disappoint and we passed the campsite we would be staying at with Cath and co. We were starting to get really excited about their upcoming visit.
The drive down the coast was a real highlight, the scenery was amazing and it seemed a shame that we were whizzing through it in one

We could have stayed there all afternoon but we were aware of the fact that Cachuma lake campsite was a first come first served, so didn't want to hang around too long.
A little further down the coast where the cliffs are less dramatic we stopped off and were thrilled to find an elephant seal colony. Wow these were big things, but seemed extremely contented snoozing in the afternoon sunshine. Males can grow up to 14 - 16 feet and weigh between 3000 - 5000 pounds, they have lived at this colony since around 1990 when less than 20 were counted in the area. Once hunted to near extinction there numbers have thankfully recovered due to them being a protected species. They seem to live a very
