URUGUAY

2ND - 5TH DECEMBER

We took an early taxi to the ferry port at Buenos Aires. We were both really sad to be leaving Buenos Aires as we felt we had misjudged the amount of time we needed here and felt like we hadn’t really done the city justice. But alas we were on our way again and our next port of call was Colonial del Sacramento in Uruguay. There are regular boat and fast boat services over the Rio de la Plata. We chose the fast boat due to our limited time here and our hoping to catch the Southern Right Whales at Peninsula Valdes. Those Whales better be there!

The ferry terminal was very hectic and after queuing and clearing customs we made our way to the fast boat, much like the Supercat to Dublin. The ferry only took 45 minutes and to our surprise we even got served breakfast and a drink much to Rob’s delight! We arrived at Colonia and decided to walk up to our hostel - bit of a
mistake really due to the hostel being a lot further than we thought! We also went via the tourist information as we couldn’t find the bank and had no Uruguayan money, although I’m sure we could have paid for everything in either pesos or dollars.

When we arrived at the hostel the room wasn’t ready and wouldn’t be until around 7.00 p.m.! We were offered a dorm room to store our luggage and take a shower. After this we headed into the old town which again was a good 15 minutes walk.

Colonia del Sacramento to give it it’s full title is an old colonial town which has influences of both Portuguese and Spanish due to them both laying claim to it at more than one occasion. I think the Brits even took charge at one point - no surprise there! The old town is an incredibly pretty
