URUGUAY
place with whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets and has a very oldie worldly feel to it. It is now mainly a tourist destination but is very pleasant and well worth a visit if you’re in the area. The outer parts aren’t as particularly pretty but the old town is the real star. Wandering round you really got a feel for what life would have been like all those years ago. It was a glorious sunny day which always makes for better sightseeing.

Before we did too much sightseeing we needed to check out lunch options, we were both fairly hungry and Rob had read about the seafood being particularly good in this area so he was eager to check out the menus. The usual suspects were on offer in the way of pizza and pasta but we found a cute little café with outdoor seating. Rob ordered a fish dish and I ordered a salad. My salad was a little disappointing but Rob enjoyed his mountain of fish
and papas fritas!

After lunch we spent the afternoon sightseeing. We checked out the lighthouse which offered fantastic views from the top balcony. There were a number of very steep stairs and small ladder you had to contend with to actually get to the viewing balcony but it was well worth the effort! We could just about see some of Buenos Aires skyscrapers on the distant horizon and seeing the old town from above was a great way to put things into perspective. After a fair bit of wandering we decided to chill out on one of the plazas and take a break from the beating sun. It reminded us of this time last year when we were in Laos in December and it was the first time in our lives that we had worn t-shirt and shorts in December and hey ho here we were again! Fingers crossed we will be doing the same thing next December, although some nagging feeling from deep inside suspects we wont be!
