PARQUE NACIONAL LOS GLACIERS
spectacular results!!! The amount of noise that even a moderate piece of ice crashing down makes is thunderous, so what the whole glacier rupturing would sound like is anybodies guess!!

Anyway, back to our visit, we pulled up into the viewpoint car park and were given two and a half hours to go and explore. We were advised that the café closed in half an hour so the first job was to go and buy a sandwich to make sure we didn’t starve during our visit! J There was a series of terraces overlooking the glacier, and we had a wander around them to check out the best views. It really was an incredible sight. We’d seen many glaciers before but the sheer scale of this one was just mind blowing!! The channel which ran in front of it was called the canal de los tempanos, or iceberg channel, and for good reason. Huge chunks of ice regularly break off the glacier and the channel is quite
literally choked up with icebergs. As well as being an impressive sight, the sound that the glacier makes as it creaks and groans is quite amazing, and there is the occasional crashing noise as ice breaks off. We found a good spot to observe the face and just sat there mesmerised, watching and listening for a good half an hour.

We finally decided to go and explore other parts of the terraces, and as luck would have it, just as we walked up some steps behind some trees there was an almighty crash. When we emerged from behind the trees we saw that an enormous piece of ice had calved off and sent a tidal wave out from the glacier - a new iceberg had been born!! Time was ticking on and it was almost time to head back to the bus, but on our way back we found a path which lead down to the lowest viewpoint that we hadn’t spotted before. We had a mad dash down to this viewpoint and a very tiring rush back
