SIEM REAP AND ANGKOR
in that no restoration has taken place here. The temple is pretty much how it was found in 1858 by a Frenchman, although the natives knew of it’s existence long before! This was another highlight of the three days, as the five hundred or so years that the place had been left to the jungle has produced some incredible intermingling of trees and walls. The whole structure was a maze of blocked off corridors and jungle filled courtyards, and if the photos look at all familiar to any of you, it’s because it was used as the set for the film Tombraider. Actually a few days later we realised that we’d got our dates mixed up, and the 10th was actually the day before, but it’s the thought that counts, and it hadn’t stopped us from reflecting on the best six months of our lives!! We went to bed at about 10 o clock that night to prepare for our 4.15 start to the next day!!
4.15 came around very quickly indeed, and we stumbled downstairs to our waiting driver, almost falling over the hotel owner who was asleep under a mosquito net on the porch!! Approaching Angkor Wat in almost complete darkness was another truly wonderful experience! The sky was amazing, one of those star filled skies that you only see when you really get away from the city lights of our modern world, and the dark silhouettes of the great Angkor towers looming in the
