THE SOUTHERN ALPS
waterfall. It didn’t sound like much of a climb but believe me my legs were complaining like hell and I was again starting to wonder about the joys of walking up Avalanche Peak the next day! The walk was worth the leg pain as the waterfall was tremendous, it was in good flow and was fantastic to watch. We then headed back to the Bongo for some lunch, then found a free campsite and opted for a very chilled afternoon. We camped next to a dried up river bed and were surrounded by snow-capped mountains which was just fantastic. We were bracing ourselves for another super cold night but it somehow didn’t seem as cold as it had been at Craigieburn which was a relief! The stars were fantastic and Rob had bought himself a star guide but for some strange reason we didn’t end up checking it out, I think it must have just been a little bit too cold for standing outside star gazing!

around 7 and were up straight away. Rob was very excited and I was sort of looking forward to it, but the thoughts of a 1000 metre ascent up a difficult mountain still worried me somewhat! But I was determined to go for it and give it my best shot so while Rob made his well thought out breakfast I made sandwiches. Unfortunately I managed to cut the end of my middle finger on the cheese grater which bled like mad and was pretty painful and annoying. I also had a cut on my little finger which I had cut the day before so my hands were taking a bit of a battering! Still what could be better for them than hauling yourself through loads of bushy trees up a dead steep mountain!!!
The walk was estimated to take around 6-7 hours and we were planning to start at Scott’s Track then hopefully loop round and come down on the other side. Scott’s Track was a little longer than the other way but wasn’t as
