THE SOUTHERN ALPS
steep. We had enough food to keep us going for a week and Rob even took the little cooker so we could have a hot drink when ever we fancied one! We first went to the DOC office to register our walk, it was the first time I have ever been registered on a walk, but Rob reassured me that if anything happened then someone would come looking for us! Wow that sure filled me with confidence! Anyway off we went and within the first 5 minutes of walking I knew that this was going to be really difficult. It was an incredibly hard mountain to climb, you had to haul yourself up through all of this bush land, climb through streams, clamber up and over things on your hands and knees, I was shot at after half an hour, never mind the 2-3 hours it takes you to get to the top!!! I wished I’d put a plaster on each of my fingers as they kept bleeding and were sore, I tried to put a brave face on but secretly wished that it was someone else climbing up that mountain with Rob. It was hard, even Rob thought it was hard but we
plodded on and when we got to the first clearing were treated to some pretty amazing views. After a good 2 and a half hours of solidly going up a steep hill we finally got to the snow line, the views were awesome of Rolleston Peak, they were that good we stopped for a snow-brew! Rob promptly filled the pan with snow and made us both a cup of tea, it was the first time I had ever had a hot drink made from snow and there were quite a few jealous looking people walking past us!
Rob wasn’t sure if we would make it to the top but I said I would give it a go. After our tea we carried on and ended up having to go on a sort of ridge with shear drops either side. I didn’t exactly feel very comfortable as it was really windy but I just didn’t bother looking either side of me, I just kept my eyes fixed straight ahead! I was really quite scared, it has to be said, but I had overcome all of my other
