THE SOUTHERN ALPS
paying campsite for the night and go the very warm and snug café bar for something to eat and a very well deserved pint or two! I was too tired to even drive over the road to the campsite so Rob drove us over the road and we parked up. I had a good wash and soaked my aching feet but Rob was eager to get to the pub for a pint and a sit in front of the roaring open fire! The café bar was a godsend! It was so nice to be sat inside somewhere warm, the first pint went down rather well and the second was equally as pleasant. We ordered some food which came and was delicious then slowly sleep was drawing near and we had to make the transition from warm bar to cold van!

We woke up to the sun beating down on Bongo which made for a pleasant wake up. Both of our legs felt like lead and neither of us wanted to move an inch! After putting off going to the toilet for as long as we could, we finally had to
move ourselves and get up. It seemed a very difficult task, what had we done to ourselves? We were like old biddies, there was certainly going to be no rushing us today! Again driving was the main plan for the day and today’s drive would be a trip down to Franz Joseph Glacier, another fairly long drive but again at least it meant that we didn’t have to move very much!!! What a fabulous time we’d had, the weather apart from at Lyell had been superb, the scenery was just awe-inspiring and we’d been treated to some fantastic high mountain views from the one and only Avalanche Peak!
