THE SOUTHERN ALPS
around an hour and a half later we were nearing the top. We saw the last sign which said 15 minutes to go and we were up to the top in no time at all. It had been another gentle uphill walk, nothing too strenuous and the views were out of this world. It was a little bit cloudy so we hung around for a good half and hour or so before I started to get really cold. After braving it for another 15 minutes I needed to get moving again due to me starting to get ultra cold, a lot of the cloud had cleared so we did end up getting some superb views of the surrounding valley. Of course this walk wasn’t good enough for old Roberta, no, he wished we had gone up the other hill to the snow line!!! After seeing this other walk he wished we had done that instead of this one, I told him I didn’t really fancy it as it looked like a pretty scary ridge, but we could do it if he really wanted. Thankfully he saw sense and we decided to start our walk back down. If he had been with anyone else then he would have been up
there in a flash! He is so much more of a dare-devil than me and is also a lot more experienced with mountain walking than yours truly! We didn’t walk back the same way but continued round to the visitors centre and then onto Hut Creek Walk which had a wonderful panoramic viewpoint. By this point it was a really clear sunny day so the views were absolutely magnificent. We were really starting to feel it in our legs as we had been out for hours so started to head off in the direction of home before the sun lowered itself behind the mountains and the cold set in. We’d had a wonderful day’s walking but were pretty tired by the time we got back to Bongo - oh for a hot spa pool, but no such luck I’m afraid just a very cold Bongo! It didn’t take the sun long to hide behind the mountains and it was that cold that we ended up making the bed around 7.30 p.m. and sat playing cards and yahtzee under a mountain of sleeping bags and quilts.
