FRANZ-JOSEPH & FOX GLACIERS
15TH - 19TH APRIL
It was a pleasure to be sitting down and driving for most of the day due to our previous days mountain climb. Again we passed through some superb scenery with fantastic views over the high mountains. We arrived quite late and it was definitely too cold for having a shower but it would be really nice to have a warm kitchen/lounge to sit in. One of the first things we did when we arrived in the village was visit the DOC centre and get a weather update for the area. We had been considering doing a heli-hike but wanted to do it at Fox Glacier as it less touristy and better value for money. So we wanted to check out the weather before making any definite plans. The weather wasn’t looking too bad so we were hopeful that we may get to do a heli-hike after all.We were up fairly early but were again still feeling rather achy so we decided to have a fairly lazy day, but
first thing on the agenda was having a lovely hot shower, something which we hadn’t had for a few days and we were definitely in need of one and some clean clothes. The weather was fairly dull and rainy but it cleared up slightly in the afternoon so we went for a wander around the town, which was pleasant enough. It was fairly busy and you could hear an almost constant buzz of helicopters overhead, either taking people to and from the glacier for a heli-hike or just a sightseeing tour. We went to check out the internet as we had definitely decided we could afford to do a trip to Antarctica and needed to start researching trips. The internet café was wicked, it was an old red single decker London bus and it was really funky!
Later on Rob made a Sunday dinner which was fantastic! We also met a couple of English girls Beth and Lois and a couple of Dutch girls, we had a great chat with them then
