FRANZ-JOSEPH & FOX GLACIERS
once you got the hang of stamping your foot down, you felt pretty safe. The first bit of climbing was good fun, Pete chopped out some steps with his axe, and we all dutifully climbed up them. We went through really high parts, low parts, ice caves which were the most incredible colours of blue you could ever imagine. It was just incredible, it has to be one the best things either of us has ever done in our lives. It was also amazing to see how much of the ice was dripping and forming little pools which would soon freeze over. We also learned how the glaciers formed and all kinds of information about them and the surrounding area, it was just fascinating. The crevices were something else, some were so deep, it was incredible. Just after we came out of one the ice caves, Pete dropped his axe and he didn’t like the look of the ice so decided he would have to abseil down the crevice to retrieve his axe as he didn’t want to chance his luck with walking on the crevice floor. This took some time and he was
very apologetic, but Rob was getting rather impatient by the end of it, as it meant less time for us hiking around. Also there was a pretty large dark grey cloud heading our way and the pilots had radioed through voicing their concerns. After around 15 minutes the axe was retrieved and we were heading off again. The last part was probably the most scary as we did some pretty narrow passages and a lot of heaving yourself up and over narrow edges. It was a great buzz though and you did feel remarkably steady on your feet so long as you didn’t try and go too fast. All of the time through our hike I had the camera at the ready so have hopefully managed to capture the moment. The weather was starting to look very ominous and we had felt a few spots of rain which turned into a steady stream of rain. Soon after this the pilots radioed through saying they needed to get us off the ice. We made our way back to the makeshift base as we certainly didn’t want to get stuck on top of a very cold glacier in either a
