FRANZ-JOSEPH & FOX GLACIERS
waterfall and looking down below at the crashing water below was something else! We hovered for a few seconds then off we went again at another strange angle, then the pilot pointed out some funny little black dots on the glacier beneath us. Those funny little dots were our fellow heli-hikers, again you realised the sheer size of the nature around us. Then we started to lower and before we knew it, we were on the ice and taking off our headphones ready to exit the helicopter. Although it was only a 7 minute ride it was just the best, I loved every minute of it and was really looking forward to our return trip.

It was really tricky to walk on the ice, but once everyone had safely got to the group of people the helicopter was ready to take off again and get the final lot of hikers. When it taking off we all had to turn away from the helicopter and kneel down. This is because the force of wind generated
from the helicopter could quite easily knock you over and cause lots of small pieces of shattered ice to literally blow up and hit you in the face. After the helicopter had taken off, we were given our crampons to attach to our boots and were given an wooden spiked pole to help us stop falling over! After the last group had arrived and been kitted out, we were ready for the off. Our leader was Pete, he was only quite young and very much a show off but he was also a nice guy.

One of the first things he told us was that he hadn’t been on the ice for a couple of weeks so didn’t know where the best bits were, so was as new to him as it was to us! Not exactly reassuring but we figured he knew what he was doing! The ice was amazing, it was so big and thick. It is really hard to try and describe, your probably better just looking at the photos! The crampons took a little bit of getting used to but
