FRANZ-JOSEPH & FOX GLACIERS
hail or thunder storm! We managed to get in the second helicopter which was great as it was raining quite heavily by this point and was freezing, so it meant we didn’t have to wait 20 minutes or so before we could get off the glacier. I didn’t get my front row seat again but had the side one at the back, so it was good to get a different view on things. The ride back was equally as great although the view wasn’t perhaps quite as good due to the poor weather but it didn’t matter, we’d had a brilliant experience. Once we had our feet firmly back on solid ground it was a relief to swap our hob nailed boots for our own comfy ones. Everybody received a heli-hike certificate and once everyone was back at the heliport we boarded the bus and were taken back to the village. I think everyone on the return bus journey had a grin from ear to ear, it was just fantastic and if anyone every gets the chance to do a heli-hike then my advice would be to forget the cost and go for it as it is a once in a lifetime
experience that you certainly won’t regret.
We stayed at the campsite in Fox village that night and then went for a celebration beer. We’d had such a brilliant day and it was so good not to have had it booked and just to turn up and decide there and then that we were doing it. One beer turned into another and we decided that we would treat ourselves further and stay out for dinner. The price of meals are pretty good value so we knew it wouldn’t break the bank and it also meant we could stay in a nice warm pub and not end up sitting in a very cold Bongo! Any excuse for a beer and dinner out!!!
We only had one full day at Fox as we were up and out fairly early the next morning but our time there had been superb and certainly full of memories that will last a lifetime and ones
