FRANZ-JOSEPH & FOX GLACIERS
listened carefully to our instructions about getting into the helicopter, and I was told to get in first and go an sit next to the pilot! Wow I couldn’t believe my luck, not only in front but next to the pilot! There was a mass of technical looking dials in front of me which I had no idea what they did, but put on my headphones and said hello to the pilot! Rob ended up being sat in the middle at the back, so he had a pretty good view. The noise and the force of the rotor blades are pretty astounding when you get in it, we didn’t feel the need to duck our heads like they always do in films, but nevertheless the power from the blades was fierce. Soon everyone was in and we were ready for take off, it was soooo exciting, I could hardly keep still and had the camera so I was clicking away like there was no tomorrow! Once the pilot introduced himself we were up and away then tilting over at a very bizarre angle before climbing higher and heading off to the right hand side of the glacier. The ride was incredible,
I absolutely loved it! I did think the pilot looked a little too casual sometimes, its funny really because they steer it with a joy-stick, so it was like living in a computer game. As we came closer to the glacier the sight before us was awesome, you feel so small when you realise just how big these glaciers really are. They are enormous and to see the reflection of the tiny helicopter on the ice really does emphasise the scale of things. As we were all feeling nice and relaxed looking at the view, the pilot suddenly banked the helicopter over and told us he was taking us to look at the waterfall on the other side. The world seemed to stand still as we tilted over at a very mad angle and it did play funny tricks with my head and tummy! The next thing he straightened it up and flew straight at the side of the mountain, I have to admit my left foot naturally reached for the brake pedal as we were hurtling towards this mountain! You do end up being pretty close to things! We ended up right over the
