NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
14TH – 25TH JULY
We planned to head up to the Redwood Forest National Park but would probably have a stop or twoen-route. We drove up the coastal road which was amazing even though it was enveloped by coastal fog, something which appears to be a common feature along this stretch of coast.
We drove for a couple of hours up the coast to an extremely beautiful forest park campsite The shimmers of light through the trees were magical, these were mightily impressive forests and we’d not even seen the giant redwoods yet! We had a very pleasant evening drinking wine and reading up on the surrounding area and where to go next.
The next morning we were heading off again and drove to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and found
ourselves at Hidden Springs campground, which was just fabulous. We had seen our first giant redwoods and the campsite was one of the best we had stayed on for quite some time. We went for a walk through the forest then came back and cooked a wonderful dinner before settling in front of our campfire with a glass of wine! Most of the camps have their own individual fire pits which is just fantastic, it is so great to be able to have your own campfire each night, it sure makes camping a real treat!
As Hidden Springs was a fairly commercial campground we decided to head further into the forest for a more rustic experience! We had been advised by a ranger to try out an environmental camp, which is basically a very basic camp consisting of a pit toilet, bear locker, fire ring and in the middle of nowhere with not another soul around for miles! There were two pitches, but the other one was unoccupied,
