ASTOLABE & DECEPTION ISLANDS
down to the front to help people off. Instead of people sitting and waiting like they had been told to do about 4 or 5 people starting standing up and attempting to get off the zodiac. It must be hard enough trying to land somewhere like this and get people safely off a zodiac in the first place, but to have to do it with a fair few idiots on board makes it near impossible. All I can say is that the crew has a great deal of patience! I waited until the end and was helped off by Speedy and Troels, the force of the water was really strong and I could see why you didn’t get to land here often.
I went and put my lifejacket into a plastic bag on the beach. This is done so that the crew can check numbers and makes sure nobody is left on the island - pretty important really! Even thought this procedure happens on every landing, the same few people still had to be told to do this and a fair few wandered

off still wearing their lifejackets! It would be no laughing matter if you found yourself stranded on a deserted island in Antarctica with no way back to the ship. But people are people and unfortunately you will always get a percentage of them who think they know best or quite frankly do not listen! There behaviour was a mild blight on an otherwise perfect day.
Rob was on the next zodiac and after our briefing by Troels we headed off. Bailey Head is home to some 300,000 pairs of Chinstrap penguins. We had been given instructions as to what was on and off limits and the 8 lane penguin super highway was definitely off limits. I didn’t think penguin colonies could get any better than the ones we had seen already but this place was something else. There was a constant stream of penguins coming to and from the rocky volcanic beach and penguins were as far as the eye could see. The penguin super
