ASTOLABE & DECEPTION ISLANDS
wasn’t over and we were due to have another landing at Deception Island. The ship headed round the island and sailed through Neptune’s Bellows, the narrow entrance into the island. This is an old volcano and we set anchor in the middle of the caldera which is a horseshoe shaped bay. Whaler’s Bay which was to be our last landing was an effort to get ready for. By this point we had become very friendly with Phil, Gary, Doris and Jacob and nobody was sure if they really wanted to see the remains of the disgusting Whaling industry. After dinner we left Doris in the bar while the rest of us headed off to our cabins to get changed. It seemed a real effort to don all of those layers for the third time in one day!
There is one amazing thing about Whaler’s Bay is it like Hot Water Beach in New Zealand, in the way that you can dig a bathing hole and if the tide is right your bathing hole will

fill up with hot water! Unfortunately the tide wasn’t right so the water was cold! We had enthusiastically raised our hands when it had been mentioned as an activity by Troels the previous night, but in the cold light of day we all thought it must have been the wine talking and nobody was particularly up for a dip! Never the less a hole was dug and Speedy, Eddie (another zodiac driver) and Engineer Ivain were all up of a dip and managed to test the difference in water temperature between the sea and the bathing hole. Apparently there wasn’t too much difference between the two!
Myself, Rob, Phil and Jacob had taken ourselves in the opposite direction of the Whaling Station and headed off up to Neptune’s window. The view from the top was pretty good but we weren’t really getting the same kind of vibe from this place as we had from the other places we had visited that
