VICTORIA COAST (EAST)
sight to see this little black thing crash out of the water, stand up, look around, weigh up the situation, then start waddling out of the water. Soon after more followed and more and more. They are sociable little things, once they are out of the water they wait for their friends before they start toddling up the beach. Whether its just safety in numbers or whether they are actually their mates and friends no-body knows, but it was a fantastic to watch.

After watching this for a while we headed to a boardwalk area which was right next to where the penguins waddle up to their nests. It was just superb watching them waddle up in their little groups, stopping every now and again for a little rest and some even had to lie down due to them being so fat! It was coming up to their moulting season, so they have to eat enough food to last them two weeks on dry land. They can’t go out to sea hunting
during this process, as their feathers are not waterproof. They are quite noisy as well, so it was really funny watching them waddling along, then stop for a rest and a chat! We were both really moved by this experience, it was just fabulous and the Australians really do deserve some praise for providing such a safe haven for this fantastic little creatures. It is really good to see wildlife being given the protection it deserves and needs for it to survive. So much of Australia’s wildlife has suffered due to introduced species and it is refreshing to see that now people are really trying to put right to the wrongs of the past. Thankfully all their efforts are rewarded by having successfully blended nature with tourism, something which can’t have been easy, but they have achieved with great success.

We stayed for a good while observing the movements of these penguins, there are many
