CALGARY
about Eddie the Eagle’s fantastic performance at the games. We saw his famous helmet and were quite amused by the 10 minutes or so of personal commentary about him and his magnificent spirit and what we didn’t realise was that he even had a personal mention by the president of the Winter Olympics in the closing speech at the games - it went something like, ‘the spirit of the games will live on and some people have even proved you can fly like an eagle’ at which point you were deafened by the roar of the crowd - it almost brought a tear to your eye. Eddie the eagle must have felt so proud!!! I wonder what he is doing now? When you stand at the top of those ski jumps it is hard to imagine how a plasterer from Cheltenham decided to take up ski jumping and believe me you’d had to have some amazing bottle to launch yourself down one of those things! After reminiscing about the wonders of Eddie the eagle we moved on to the Bobsleigh run, again we were reminded about the wonders of Jamaica’s effort in
this sport. After visiting a few of these Olympic Parks it has made me realise that I’d love to go to a games, it would be such good fun. Here’s hoping they have one in Europe soon. We also visited the Ice House, which is the only facility of it’s kind in the world. It is basically an indoor luge training circuit, again you’d have to be pretty bonkers to take up this sport, those things really do look like glorified tea trays at close range! There wasn’t much action going on there as there seemed to be various people spraying water onto the ice and due to the sub-zero temperatures in there we didn’t hang around for too long. After this we had pretty much seen everything there was to see so we jumped on the bus back to Calgary and had a fairly chilled night, although we were getting very excited by this point about our forthcoming adventure with Russ and Ruth!
