JOBURG, NELSPRUIT & BLYTHE RIVER CANYON
The lady there was very friendly and had kept a quiet room near the back for Mike as she said he’d be needing a good sleep after such a long flight!! I don’t really know how Mike does it - he always seems to get mothered wherever he goes - and she’d not even met him yet!!
So the waiting was finally over - the day of Mike’s arrival was finally here. He was arriving from Jo’burg at half past one and I spent the morning making a chilli so I didn’t have to cook later on when I’d want to catch up with Mike. After choosing a dodgy “shortcut” to the airport we were a little late arriving and as we drove into the car park we were greeted by a beaming Lever-Beaver with his backpack on!! It was great to see Mike again, and after he’d had a couple of hours kip we all settled down with a few beers and a plate of chilli to catch up. We didn’t push the boat out too far though, as we

wanted to be up handy in the morning to head to Kruger via Blythe River Canyon, a scenic part of the world if the reports were to be believed!!
Blythe River Canyon is at the edge of the Drakensburg Escarpment, the line of cliffs where the highlands of the Gauteng Province, where Jo’burg and Pretoria are, and the lowlands of Mpumalanga Province, where Kruger and Nelspruit are. The escarpment drops over a thousand meters, and has some pretty impressive viewpoints.
We stopped first at God’s Window which after a short walk up to the edge gave us great views over the surrounding countryside. You could see for miles - all the way over where Kruger Park is. It was a pretty scenic drive further up into the canyon, where we stopped at Bourke’s Luck Potholes. These are strange potholes in
