TAMAN NEGARA

All our meals were included, we could eat at anytime, so after a little wander around the camp we decided we’d go and check out the restaurant. The food was fairly good, and you got loads of it. There were set breakfasts, lunches and dinners, of which we could have any. Each one contained a few dishes, which we had to alter to make them veggie, but I remember thinking that we were definitely weren’t going to go hungry!! After we’d finished eating there was a bit of a commotion in the other part of the restaurant (we’d chosen the outer bit away from the TV!), and we went to investigate. We were quite taken aback when we saw a porcupine scurrying between the tables making a beeline for a plastic plate of food scraps!! We learned that she was a daily visitor to the camp, always turning up around the same time for her tea!!

Our first activity was a night walk through the rainforest. We
were introduced to our guide for the duration, a Malaysian guy with his pseudonym name of Ajax (as in the Amsterdam football team, not the cleaning powder!!). He explained to us that at night we would mostly see insects and spiders, it was quite unusual to see any larger animals. There were six of us in the group, an Irish couple from London and two French Ladies. So we all headed off into the dark and scary Jungle, and before we even left the camp, Ajax pointed out a huge Spider’s web with a fittingly huge spider in the middle of it, right above our heads!! It was a little unnerving, but he explained that in the rainforest, any spider which has a web is not dangerous, it’s the ones that live in holes that you need to steer clear of!! This of course completely reassured us all!!

It was a really mad experience walking though the forest at night, we were certainly glad of the torch we’d
