TAMAN NEGARA
bought! I think the most incredible thing was the sounds that we could here all around us - you really did get the impression that the whole place was alive with heavens knows how many creatures - and that’s because it was!! Ajax told us that living in this forest were gibbons, wild boar, monitor lizards, bears, various kinds of deer, and even a small number of tigers!! And that’s before you even start on the birds and creep crawlies!!
At one point we stopped and Ajax told us to turn off our torches, just to get the complete effect - now it really was scary!! Just at that point Hel let out an almighty yelp and grew to about 10 foot tall!! Something had just trodden on her foot!! The torch went back on pretty much straight away - only to find the porcupine from the camp sitting there. She had followed us all the way, and from then on, every time we stopped, she would rest her head on the

nearest foot!!! The only other thing bigger than a spider we caught a glimpse of was a moss deer - apparently a small deer which lives in the forest. We also came across some shelters made by the indigenous population which lived there. I spent most of the way home at the back of the group - which really was a pretty un-nerving experience!! All sorts of noises coming from the blackness behind me made me pretty jumpy!! We got back to the camp without being eaten though, and got an early night in preparation for our next day.
We were up pretty early the next day and straight after breakfast we were heading off up Warisan Hill, the highest point in the vicinity. It was a tough hour and a half’s climb to the top, and we left the glamorous French Ladies (with full make-up and hair done) at the halfway point, as they were a little older than the rest of us, and had run out of energy!! It has to be said
