TAMAN NEGARA
started out on our walk to Abai waterfall the benefits of a smaller group became clear. We heard a crashing noise from the trees on our left, and could just about make out a big shape moving through them. This was our one and only fleeting glance of a gibbon. Even though we didn’t see it clearly, it was still amazing to be in the presence of such an animal. We trekked through the forest, and came to a native people’s camp. No-one was home as they were all out collecting oil from the rainforest trees - Ajax showed us the way that the cut into the trees and then oil seeps into the hole - they then collect the oil and sell it for salad dressing!!! It was also mad to see pineapples growing in the garden, as well as Jackfruit - a strange looking fruit about the size of a football which grows on trees!! Just as we were about to set off, we heard a rustling from behind the hut - and out popped the most unexpected animal we’d seen so far - a domestic cat!! He was apparently their pet and Ajax explained that he
was very lonely as there were no other cats in the area - we felt very sorry for him, and were pleased when he followed us on our walk. Our walk crossed the river several time, and at one point Ajax had to go back to carry the cat across!!

We finally reached the waterfall, and it really was a gorgeous spot! It must have been around fifteen foot high, and dropped into a big pool, which looked very inviting!! Ajax was straight in there, closely followed by yours truly!! Hel was a little more hesitant, but soon followed!! The water was pretty cold but a welcome relief from the hot and humid jungle!!! Unlike the enormous waterfall in Laos, this one was small enough to swim up to and get behind. Ajax was already there, and I followed - only to be face to face with an enormous frog who was sat chilling on the rocks behind the waterfall! He seemed like a friendly enough chap though, and Ajax assured me
