KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
lionesses sleeping next to the riverbank.
Wow, the feeling of seeing these animals in the wild is one that is hard to describe. Although they were quite far away they were still there and it didn’t matter how far away they were, we’d seen them. One of them was starting to stir and as she lifted her tired head she gave a massive yawn, then settled herself down again and off she was, back in the land of nod. One was on her back soundly sleeping and the other was half awake. I could have stayed there all day watching these superb predators sleeping soundly. It is strange to think that they have no idea how much interest their just being there creates. You could almost feel the buzz off all the amateur wildlife spotters! The scenery around the river bank was also really attractive and green and made a nice change to all of that scrubland we’d seen over the past couple of

As we drove on we came to a big lake and saw a mass of hippos wallowing in its waters. At times you didn’t really know that they were there, the only way you could spot them was by the water suddenly starting to bubble then a big hippos head would pop out before disappearing under the water surface once again. We also saw a number of crocodiles on the banks of the river and these were really difficult to spot as they were so well camouflaged against the grassy banks. We stayed here for quite a while just soaking up the views.
We carried on and called in at the Sabie River Camp as Mike wanted to buy some binoculars, we needed to clear the camera cards and we all needed the bathroom! That’s the thing with Kruger if you get caught short then there is nothing you can do about it other than cross your legs and hope you make it to the
