ULURU
20TH - 22ND FEBRUARY
We’d decided that Uluru was a must even though it was expensive to get too. We’d also decided that flying was our only option for getting there. The alternative is driving for days and days and days through mainly outback desert! This is when you get some idea of the size of Australia, when you start looking at driving distances and times, it is a vast country and we wanted to make the most of our time. Our flight was early morning so we were up and out for 6 am!!! The flight was around 3 hours and there was a time change of an hour and a half! The scenery out of the window was flat and went on forever so we were definitely glad to have flown. At one point we saw a vast salt lake in the desert. When we got close, you could see Uluru clearly from the plane and we were pretty cheesed off as we were on the wrong side of the plane to get a good view. Fortunately
the plane circles round it so everyone ends up getting a great view. Wow what a thing, the largest monolith in the world and it looked pretty large to us! Even from the aeroplane window the colour of the ground was amazing, a beautiful rich cinnamon colour with sporadic parts of green. This part of Australia felt like real Australia, an ancient and sacred land with a rich colourful history (until the Europeans came along!) and an ancient people with a culture full of ritual, legend and an understanding of how best to serve and manage the land whilst peacefully co-existing with mother nature.
Each plane is met by the Ayers Rock Resort shuttle bus. It is very well managed and before we knew it we were pulling into the camping ground. Thankfully this resort is very well presented, as we were both wondering whether it would be a tacky overpriced affair. We were pleased to find that not only was the
