UTTARANCHAL
had quite enough fun for one day. The only thing we really wanted was a beer but because it’s a holy town they don’t bloody well sell it!!! So definitely no beer and footie for us - boo!

We had wanted to hire bikes before we left as the countryside was so nice, we thought it would be good fun and seeing as bike hire was £1.25 for two we knew it wasn’t going to break the bank! By the time we’d had breakfast and got to the bike hire place, it was around lunch time, and the only bikes he had left were ones without gears! We didn’t think this would be too much of a problem as it wasn’t that hilly - oh when are we going to learn??? Off we set and almost immediately realised that these bikes brought a whole new meaning to the term ’boneshakers’. They were the worst bikes either of us had ever ridden and even thought it wasn’t that hilly, it was difficult getting up the smallest of
slopes. I couldn’t be bothered even trying to battle with mine up-hills, it wasn’t worth the bother especially in the heat, I just got off and pushed it! We battled on for a good hour or so before the road forked away from the river and we’d both really had enough, so we turned round and headed for home. We were thinking ’oh it won’t be so bad going the other way, it’s mostly downhill’, nope not on these things, they are the only bikes I have ever known where it is hard work going downhill! The brake kept sticking on mine which meant I had to peddle like hell just to get the thing going! Oh and the chain fell off it twice so Rob ended up covered in oil!!! Rob’s bike didn’t even have cable brakes so that may give you some indication as to how old these things were! We finally got back and dropped the bikes off, the bike man asking if we’d had a bit of trouble with them due to Rob’s hands being covered in oil!
