UTTARANCHAL
people who just shove things right in your face almost demanding money from you, which I can’t say I particularly like. There was one guy who had some kind of religious tray, with a picture of one of the many Indian gods and a big fat stinking joss stick burning. He stuck it right in my face, waved it around while shaking a tin at me and asking for money. I find this kind of begging particularly intrusive, in fact I find a lot of Indian behaviour intrusive. Now I am only generally speaking but there seems to be a very single minded attitude in Indian society, it is almost like people are blinkered and completely oblivious to their surroundings. People just don’t seem to naturally stop to help others. I saw a little girl climbing down the bunk steps on the train and as her father was helping her down this oldish woman, rather than waiting for her to get down safety just pushed past knocking the poor girl out of the way and causing her to bash her leg on the metal steps. Now this may seem like a small
thing, but people do not seem to have any ability to wait and think of others. There has been loads of occasions when we have seen this kind of thing. When I was getting off the train, I was actually in the middle of the door (with my rucksack on) just about to put my foot onto the platform when this lad coming the other way tried to board the train and in doing so shoved me so hard I almost fell backwards. I have to say I was in no mood to move and just asked him ‘why can you not just wait for one second?’ It was almost like he hadn’t even seen me! I find it incredible that there are very few people who will help you when you’re struggling with your bags. Having said that people are generally helpful if you ask them anything but its just when it comes to being in their way and then there is no regard for you whatsoever and I just find this type of human behaviour very strange!
