SAN FRANCISCO & AROUND

Roland had arranged to meet his other son Joe in Groveland, near Yosemite. We headed off late morning and had arranged to call Joe when we got to Groveland. Unfortunately nobody thought about the fact that the mobiles or cell phones wouldn’t work out in the middle of nowhere - doh! So we had a vague plan to meet Joe in Groveland near Ferretti Road. We arrived, found a park, and waited for Joe. We waited and waited. Roland was getting edgy and decided to go for a drive along Ferretti Road to see if he could see any signs of Joe. I went with him and we set off in search of a rangers hut, which is where Roland thought Joe maybe. After an fruitless search we arrived back in Groveland and decided that time was ticking by and we needed to find somewhere to stay. Roland and I had seen a campsite, so we thought we’d head there and leave a message with Dominic in case Joe called him. Just as we were on our way down to the campsite the phone burst into life and there we 3 voice-mails from Joe saying that he
was running late and for us to wait for him where we’d been waiting for the last 3 hours!!! So off we went again to Groveland park and sure enough Joe turned up pretty close to his recent estimated time! Joe works for a rafting company and had arranged for us to stay at the rafting companies house. We dropped our stuff off then headed into Groveland for something to eat at the Iron Door Salon. The Iron Door Salon was a proper saloon type affair but we opted for the restaurant rather than the bar side with resident band!

We had seen the previous night posters for the World Cup and had asked at the Iron Door if they would be showing it. They said they would be so we headed down around 9.00 a.m. to watch the all important England game against Portugal. To our horror the Iron Door was closed so after a short amount of dithering I suggested we try at another hotel instead of driving to a
